Parent Training/Coaching IS Part of the Recommended Treatment for Your Child

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends both symptom and behavioral management for the treatment of childhood ADHD. Symptom intensity is often controlled using medication under the care of a physician. Parent training/coaching, a primary part of Behavioral Management, teaches parents how to develop their child’s life skills and implement strategies to overcome the unique challenges of ADHD. This type of support also helps parents use the positive parenting techniques so important in raising a child with ADHD.

Welcome to Chaos Free Family
Welcome to the Chaos Free Family parent training and coaching course. We are so glad you are here! This is a big step for you, and we want to make sure you know the coaches supporting this course are dedicated to helping you in any way possible.  Our goal is to help parents of children with ADHD and Executive Function deficits find peace in their homes and raise their children to confident independence. Again, welcome!

Becoming a Coaching Parent
Parent support for a child with Executive Function deficits (ADHD, etal.) is more than creating strict rules, making the “meds or no meds” decision, and getting school accommodations. This lesson focuses on why parent training is a critical part of your child’s management and what it means to be a Coaching Parent.

The Reality of ADHD
Our understanding of ADHD has changed significantly in the past 10 years and this lesson focuses on bringing parents up to speed.  Learn what is really going on inside the brains of those with ADHD and Executive Function deficits. This is where you start to change both your perspective and response to your child’s challenges.

The Executive Functions
Behavior and performance are about more than “motivation” or a willingness to comply. Sometimes just restating the instructions or making a list is not the best way to help your child. This lesson further explores the Executive Functions and how to create targeted interventions when addressing your child’s challenges.

ADHD Symptom Management
Explore the structural and chemical differences of the ADHD brain and how they influence your child’s behavior.  Managing symptom intensity is crucial in preparing your child’s brain to learn new skills. This lesson focuses on providing information on the four main symptom management methods so you can work with your care provider to find the right solution for your child.

ADHD & Emotions
The most popular request from parents of a child with Executive Function deficits is, “Help me have more patience with my child”.  An important first step is to understand how EF deficits impact your child’s ability to regulate their emotions. This lesson focuses on providing parent strategies for managing their emotions during time of emotional dysregulation and a stepwise process to help your child recover from a loss of emotional control.

Growing Independence
Independence is not a decision.  Independence is grown through a series of stages in which the child gradually builds consistent capability and the parent gradually reduces support. This lesson focuses on understanding how children learn new skills and taking an objective look at your child’s true level of independence for a set of basic life skills.

Managing Transitions and Initiation
Difficulty in transitioning between tasks is often confused with willful and defiant behavior.  This lesson focuses on how a simple change in task sequencing and use of a simple process can ease the stress of transitions. Also included are tips on how to help your child initiate non-preferred tasks.

Time Management
Creating a predictable daily rhythm for your child doesn’t mean every day has to be the same. This lesson focuses on guiding parents through setting the foundations for effective time management. This process starts with identifying the child’s priorities, then communicating those priorities with a visual roadmap for when those priorities will be completed.

Correcting Behavior
Ever wonder why your discipline method is not creating a long-term behavioral change in your child? This lesson focuses on what happens in the brain during reward and punishment and why traditional parenting methods don’t work in teaching your child new skills and appropriate behaviors.

CFIM Part 1
The Chaos Free Improvement Method is a simple, step-wise way to develop effective processes for your child’s everyday life.  Whether it’s the morning routine, doing chores, or completing homework, this method is a tool your child can use for the rest of their lives. Part 1 walks you through how to collaborate with your child and get started on your first improvement project.

CFIM Part 2
Taking the data you collected in Chaos Free Improvement – Part 1, you will learn to analyze your process from all sides and continue to collaborate with your child in selecting the adjustments to make to your process. If you are struggling with how to proceed, talk to your coach or attend a group support call.

Care Provider Visits
Getting the best care for your child begins with effectively communicating with your doctor.  Every treatment decision is based on the quality of information you can provide about your child. This lesson focuses on how to collect and relay that information.
